What is this workshop about?

"The Indian automotive industry has emerged as a 'sunrise sector' in the Indian economy" - Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce. April'13. The automotive industry in India is one of the largest automotive markets in the world. India's passenger car and commercial vehicle manufacturing industry is the sixth largest in the world, with an annual production of more than 3.9 million units in 2011. According to recent reports, India overtook Brazil and became the sixth largest passenger vehicle producer in the world.

With the automotive industry growing multi-fold every year, it is never a bad thought to think about securing a position in it. The automotive industry requires people having the knowledge of engine design and chassis design. The workshop provides the participants with the much-required exposure to the concepts of Automobile Engineering and a hands-on experience to build your own RC Car replicating most of the systems present in an actual car!

Course Outcomes

• Design and build your own RC Car with powertrain, suspension and steering systems.
• Guidance to participate in student design competitions like FSAE, BAJA etc.
• Designed as a bridge course for mechanical/aeronautical engineers to enter the field of Automobile Engineering.
• Comparative case studies about on-road automobiles for better understanding.
• Introduction to latest trends in automobile engineering.

• Basics of Automobiles: History & Classification - 0.5 hr
• Detailed exposure to different systems in an automobile - 5 hr

  • IC Engines: Basics & Component analysis (Case studies included).
  • Transmission Systems.
  • Suspension Systems.
  • Steering Systems.
  • Locomotion (Tyres/brakes/wheels).
  • Chassis.
  • Aerodynamics and stability.
• Comparative Case Studies & Group Discussions on existent automobiles - 1 hr
• Discussion of problem statements from previous international student automobile competitions like FSAE, BAJA etc - 0.5 hr
